Pomegranate Puzzle Solved

Shubhra

Does the thought of opening up a pomegranate leave you dazed and confused? This is the season to find beautiful red pomegranates at your grocery store, and with these easy tips from Greenista Girl Shubhra’s award winning cookbook, Entice with Spice – Easy Indian Recipes for Busy People, you can enjoy the fruit (actually seeds), of your labor! We enjoy eating the ruby red jeweled seeds as they are, and sometimes even with a sprinkle of salt on them. Or try them in salads, couscous, sprinkled over chicken or fish dishes, or in yogurt or ice cream. Mmmm!

How to Extract Seeds from a Pomegranate

  • Cut off the crown (the small protruding knob) with a knife.
  • Score the pomegranate from the crown end down to the other end, cutting only skin-deep, into four or five sections.
  • Pry the wedges apart with your hands. Working over a bowl, face a wedge downwards and bend it back to allow the seeds to come loose, picking out the seeds with your fingers.
  • Repeat with the other wedges. Enjoy!

Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants, which are molecules that prevent and repair damage to body cells. A diet rich in antioxidants may improve immune function and lower the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

City Slicker: Weleda Pomegranate Body Oil

Greenista Girl Neha

Does traditional body oil make you feel out of sorts? Well Greenista Girl Neha found the best product for you. Weleda came out with their newest product – Pomegranate Body Oil ($28/3.4 oz) – and it’s a nourishing full-body treatment that regulates moisture balance and restores your natural vitality with potent antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and organic pomegranate and jojoba seed oil. Just apply a small amount to damp skin and massage in a circular motion. The best part: It won’t leave your skin oily like conventional ones and it’s free of toxic and synthetic chemical. Plus, it’ll help skin renewal by 50% in just two weeks. Yee-ha!

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: Pomegranate juice, super-rich in antioxidants, decreases the risk of heart attacks by promoting heart and artery health. It may also fight prostate cancer by shrinking tumors.
