Clothes Encounters: Organic Clothing Line

Greenista Girl Neha

Does an all eco wardrobe seem alien to you? Trade in your UFO (unidentified fabric outfit) for an eco one. Ecozuzu uses eco fabric like organic cotton, recycled poly-fiber made from old water bottles, and uses low-impact dyes for decorative flowers, hearts, skulls, and dragons. Pick from super soft tees, long sleeves, skirts, hoodies, and cropped sweat pants … all with funky silk screens done by an artist local to them. Ecozuzu’s luxurious clothing also comes with recycled tags, eco friendly soy inks, and is packaged in recycled materials. PS: They have duds for men and kids, too. Go ahead, make some space in your closet.

Great Post and very informative! However, you neglected to mention bamboo fabric as a sustainable and green alternative. Bamboo is a grass that can grow just about anywhere with very little water, no pesticides, no fertilizer, and doesn’t destroy soil nutrients the way that cotton does. In addition, the fabric is soft, durable, does not need color fixatives, is anti-microbial and has natural SPF.

  5. that’s incredible.

These super comfy yet sexy panties already grace the closets of us Greenista Girls but what we love is they have a new line made from organic cotton. Squeal! Over 2.03 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers were applied to conventional cotton in 2000 (142 pounds/acre), making cotton the fourth most heavily fertilized crop behind corn, winter wheat, and soybeans.

Organic Pregnancy Belly Bands

Greenista Girl Shivani

Feeling yellow-bellied about ditching your pre-pregnancy pants for maternity ones? Get brave and try BellaBand’s ($32) new organic cotton version. Originally created for pregnant women, but usable by all, this elastic fabric goes around your waist to hold up your pants during your preggo months and comes in white, black, and sand. Pair it with your unbuttoned normal jeans during your first trimester as well as the 2nd and 3rd to keep your maternity pants from sagging.

Bonus: BellaBand’s great for fitting into those skinny jeans postpartum. BellaBand creators, Ingrid and Isabel, also have a sleek, trendy new line of tanks, leggings, and pants that look super comfy for preggo ladies of any size. Be courageous and show off that sultry baby bod.

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: In the United States alone, approximately 600,000 tons of pesticides and chemical fertilizers are applied to conventional cotton fields each season. Buying organic cotton means you’ll never have to worry about your cotton crops being sprayed with pesticides, which in turn keeps it out of your fabric and the planet, not to mention off your body.

Gorgeous Natural Fiber Summer Skirts

Greenista Girl Neha

Are you a skirt chaser? Stop the hunt and pick up The Ellie Skirt ($168) by Mountains of the Moon. It’s periwinkle, tiered, and has an A-line cut making it the perfect classic summer skirt. Looking at it, we’d never guess that it’s made from 55% hemp and 45% tencel fabric – it’s so eco-licious! Sure, the skirt’s a little pricey but just think of all the possibilities – you can go casual, chic, or dressy.

Designer Melissa Baswell also creates eco-friendly pants, shirts, and dresses like the one-shoulder Morgan Dress ($248) with a gathered hem (love!). The designs are stylish and can be worn for multiple seasons rising above trends and avoiding landfills. Go ahead, play the field and splurge on a few pieces.

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: Tencel (also known under the generic name, Lyocell) is made from biodegradable and recyclable wood pulp and produced using less emissions, energy, and water so it’s much better for the planet than conventionally produced fabrics.

Greenista’s Picks for Skinny Jeans

Neha Shivani

Skinny jeans went from  hipster trend to serious wardrobe staple in the last couple of years. I like to wear mine tucked into boots  or with long blouses and structured jackets. It’s time to buy a new pair and in true Greenista fashion I’m looking for a pair made of organic denim.

Why organic denim? Denim is made of cotton, which takes up 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land but uses 16% of the world’s pesticides.  Organic cotton cuts down on the use of chemical pesticides, which in turn cuts down on the amount of chemicals harming the environment,  humans and animals.

Most mainstream and designer denim companies are starting to offer Eco-friendly lines. I decided to check out the classic denim company Levi’s Jeans. They offer Levi’s Eco, a line of denim made of 100% organic and recycled cotton. Even the Indigo dye is plant based. Their skinny jeans are extremely affordable, retailing for $69.50 online.

Levi's Eco Skinny Jeans

Levi's Eco Skinny Jeans

7 For All Mankind, the premium denim line from LA, have a great boyfriend skinny jean made of organic cotton. This pair is perfect for a slightly less “skinny” silhouette. They are more expensive at $198.00.

I also decided to check out the eco-friendly offerings from J Brand, another popular premium denim line. I’m a little disappointed to report they have a very small line of organic denim under their Green Label. Hopefully they expand this collection to more than just 2 styles of jeans. The skinny jean is vegetable dyed in their classic Woodstock wash. They sell for $209.00 on the website.

I was a little surprised at how difficult it was to find stylish and affordable skinny jeans made of organic denim. Can our readers help? Do you have a favorite pair of skinny jeans made of organic denim? Or a favorite eco-friendly denim company? Tell us about them in the comments.
