Clueless No More: Alicia Silverstone Promotes Veganism

Brianne

A far cry from her vapid, materialistic character she played in Clueless, Alicia Silverstone is now using her popularity to advocate for eco-friendly living. Silverstone, who was also the “Sexiest Female Vegetarian” title holder by PETA, says “Everything you do in the name of the environment not only saves your health, it saves your soul.” Silverstone doesn’t claim to be extra crunchy when it comes to the green spectrum, but she does what she can. The green-conscious actress is always looking for ways to improve her home, diet, and even her ride … she switch to a hybrid. The real-life vegan blonde beauty also just launched her website The Kind Life in combination with her vegan nutrition guide, The Kind Diet. The site covers a wide variety of eco-centric topics such as style, health, environment, and home. The site also features yummy organic recipes, a forum, and a welcome video from the self-professed technologically-impaired but eco-friendly actress. It’s safe to say, Alicia Silverstone is anything but clueless when it comes to living eco-friendly.

Being vegan is super easy on the environment. First of all, you’ll take a stand against hurting or even using animal-produced products (milk, butter, and cheese are a no, no) and won’t contribute to all those greenhouse gases that livestock emits.

Thanks to the upcoming World Basketball Festival, we now get a “USA” Air Jordan 2010 Team. It seems as if more people like the Air Jordan 2010 Team than the original Air Jordan 2010 because of the windowless side panels. I’m not one of those people who likes the team better; I think the original
Nike Shoes 2010 Shoes looks much better.Since this jordan Shoes Team is made for the USA team, the colorway should be clear. White can be seen on the side panels, toe, shoe laces, tongue, part of the midsole and the entire outsole. Navy blue covers the toe, heel, inner lining and above the midsole. Red accents appear on the tongue, toe, heel, lace panels and the midsole. The sneaker is constructed of perforated white leather with larger perforations placed on the side panels.

  31. I think it is a deliberate trick that not many people try to produce their own energy? I mean do oil companies stop education to suit themselves?

Green House: Eco-fy Your Abode While You’re Away

Brianne

Wondering how to save some green while one vacay? Eco-fy your home before you travel – it’ll pay off big time come bill time. Follow these simple tips from Greenista Girl Brianne to give your home a much needed rest while you’re away.

  • Unplug all those electronics. No one will be watching that TV, using the radio, or surfing the web. All of your cable boxes and Internet modems can be shut off too. Leave the DVR on if you must.
  • Turn off all your lights. Worried about people realizing you’re not home? Use solar lights or lanterns to keep the house illuminated without wasting energy.
  • Close all blinds and add thick curtains to keep the sun out while you are away.
  • Your air conditioner is one of the biggest energy users in the house. If possible, set it to a temperature high or low enough that it will only come on to keep air flowing.
  • Your fridge is also a huge energy consumer! While turning off a fridge is easier said than done, you can set temperatures to 38°F(fridge)/-5°F (freezer) to use the least energy needed to keep food cool.

As long as they are plugged in, your computer and other electronic devices continue to use electricity – even when they are turned off or in standby mode. A computer uses up to 10 watts when it is turned off but still plugged in.

Great ideas. Apparently, “Vampire Energy” is one of the biggest energy wastes in every home — the clock on your microwave, say, or that little red light that tells you your TV is NOT on, to name two.

But it seems computers (and the printers and speakers and other peripheral devices that go with them) are particularly vile. According to the International Energy Agency, the U.S. spends almost $11 billion annually on electricity lost to “Vampire Power.” A computer left on continuously uses 70 to 250 watts — nearly as much power as an energy efficient refrigerator.

    Wow.

Papa Don’t Pitch, but I can’t help myself: we sell these really cool EcoStrip energy-saving power strips. They work like a normal power strip/surge protector with one important difference: when your computer is turned off, power is shut down to connected peripherals, eliminating the drain of “vampire” electricity.

To atone for the pitch, if you use coupon code FRIEND at checkout, you can get 25% off this or anything else at http://LetsGoGreen.biz.

    Night!

One of the best ways to go green in a small way in your home, is to adopt a house plant. Not only will it make the ambience fresh, but it will help with your air quality!

Home Alone: Green Celebrity Abodes

Brianne

Don’t want to be left behind when it comes to greening your home?  Protect your house and your family by going eco like these celebs. The star with the greenest home is none other than Johnny Depp. He owns his own island with a self-sustaining habitat that runs solely on solar-hydrogen power. Daryl Hannah parks her bum on a moss covered stone she uses as a couch. Julia Roberts gave her home a $250 million green makeover with recycled and sustainable materials and three roofs full of solar panels. And finally Jason Mraz has a solar-powered avocado farm. Um … yum! Go on and steal some of their ideas.

Mommy Dearest: Celebrity Parents Go Green

Greenista Girl Shivani

Does the thought of your baby being born with 200 chemicals in their tiny bodies make you want to go ballistic? Skip the tantrums and go eco like these celeb parents who are raising little organic babies. A number of stars enlisted Lisa and Ron Beres from Green Nest to eco-fy their nurseries. Celebrities including Trista and Ryan Sutter, Chelsea Handler, Sally Jessy Raphael, and Kelly Rutherford have all used their services.  Another very green celebrity is Soleil Moon Frye … aka Punky Brewster.  She even has an organic baby store called The Little Seed in Beverly Hills. Even Greenista Girl Shivani is enjoying a completely organic pregnancy (well almost, no one’s perfect). And let’s not forget Halle Berry. It’s reported that she spent a ton of dough greenifying her new baby’s three nurseries.  A source reported that she ordered everything from sheets to the stuffed animals and everything in between to be made with organic cotton … and no wire hangers.

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: Considered one of the most chemically dependent crops in the world, conventional cotton uses 10 percent of all agricultural chemicals and 25 percent of the world’s insecticides. In the U.S., one-third of a pound of chemicals are needed just to grow enough conventional cotton for a regular T-shirt.

Wipey travel packs can be green! …and less expensive too!

Subha

If you are like me (and many other parents out there), you are probably easily persuaded to buy some nick nack or another that you see beautifully packaged in the stores.  It’s like a drug!  Well, one of the things that I always see people buying a ton of, is travel packs of wipes.  They are pretty handy since you can use the wipes for almost anything and they have resealable openings.   You can even find many different brands, including the “eco-friendly” brands like Earth’s Best, Seventh Generation etc.  But I have one big problem wit

h these: they are still small packs of wipes that are not easily refilled, and thus, end up creating more, unnecessary trash!

My solution: Make your own bag for travel wipes.

photo by: JAS Photography LLC www.jasphotostudio.etsy.com

photo by: JAS Photography LLC at www.jasphotostudio.etsy.com

Here’s how: Get a quart sized resealable plastic bag (ziplock, glad – any brand works).  The zipper closure works better, longer than the press and seal type.  Then, take some wipes from your refill stash at home (you know, the big packs that you buy to refill your wipes at home) and put ‘em in the bag!  It’s that simple!  Fold the bag over and zip closed for an airtight seal that keeps the wipes fresh and  moist.  I use these EVERYWHERE.  I used to use this small hard box that I kept in my diaper bag, but it doesn’t fit that many wipes and it is not maleable when space is low in my diaper bag.  The plastic bag works great.    Even when I go on long vacations, I take a big pack of wipe refills from home, and keep refilling the plastic bag as I need.  I usually have a plastic grocery bag or two laying around somewhere, and I keep the open pack of wipe refills in there until I need them next.  They have never dried out on me.  I’ve been using the same plastic bag for several trips and on a day to day basis in my diaper bag without a problem!

Nothing comes for free: The one thing that is a little more difficult with this system, is taking out multiple wipes.  The store bought travel packs have a hard, small opening to take your wipes out of which keeps the rest of the wipes back and allows you to pull one wipe out at a time (keep in mind, this is more plastic that is wasted with each one you buy!).  The way I handle this is I take out 1 to 3 to whatever number of wipes I usually need before I get started, and then they are easy to access.  Makes me feel a lot better when I’m not throwing away those travel packs over and over again!  …and oh yeah…it’s a LOT cheaper too!

Any other ideas on how to save on resources?
