Certain shrubbery can help eliminate indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene. Try Golden pothos, English ivy, and peace lilies.

Mr. Clean: Non-Toxic Household Cleaners

Brianne

Wanna make your place sparkle like the top of Mr. Clean’s head? Skip the toxic cleaners for eco-friendly brands like SimpleGreen, Greenworks, Mrs. Meyers, Ecover, Method, Green Depot, and Seventh Generation. Cleaning products end up … in our homes, cars, and office as well as on dishes, countertops, furniture, clothes, floors, windows, and hovering through the air. Most of the conventional ones we’re used to are toxic and nearly all of the traditional cleaning products we have grown up with are petroleum-based and have perilous health and environmental implications. Sit back and think about it for a moment … our traditional household cleaners all have the warning seal, DO NOT CONSUME. Fair enough. But if it’s harmful to consume isn’t it harmful to breathe it in and let it leach into our skin? We think, yes! Instead of opting for cleaning products that annihilate everything in their path with toxic, there are plenty of natural products and methods that keep a house clean and fresh-smelling minus the toxic side effects. Try it!

The kiddos are highly vulnerable to chemical toxicants. Children drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air than adults … this means that children will have substantially heavier exposures than adults to any toxins that are present.

  11. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Goodnight Moon: Solar Lights

Shubhra

Do you know what time it is? Lights out. And by out, we mean outside in your garden. Outdoor solar lights and lanterns are a great way to light up your backyard and have a festive atmosphere every evening. Just pick a spot to light up, stick the solar light in the dirt, and let the sun do its job and power the light. Seriously … it couldn’t be easier. No wires, cords, electricity, timers, or switches. When the sun goes down, the lights come on. Easy peasy. And best of all, no bills. Greenista Girl Shubhra likes to stick the solar lights in her balcony garden, but you can also use them to line your driveway and all around your front or back yard. We love how it works great for outdoor nighttime parties and also keeps areas safely lit without dangerous flames. And the lights turn off themselves when the sun comes up, so no energy is wasted. Now we can all sleep better.

Solar power has tons of benefits. It’s eco-friendly since its uses no carbon fuels. It’s a free, natural and renewable energy source, and for every solar light you use in place of a traditional bulb, you will see a drop in your electric bill.

See The Light: The Ionic Bulb

Greenista Girl Shivani

Do you do it with the lights on or off? Either way, rest assured that the Ionic Bulb ($19.99/2) is one of the greenest around. It’s an energy-saving bulb that silently emits negative ions that helps clear the air of smoke, dust, pet dander, and odors. Imagine using 75% less energy to light your home or office – the Ionic Bulb uses just a quarter of the wattage of standard bulbs to produce the same amount of light. That alone could save you hundreds on your electric bill. Plus, the Ionic Bulb lasts 10 times as long as incandescent bulbs (up to seven years) saving you the cost and hassle of frequently replacing bulbs. Now you can be naughty just between the sheets, not with the environment.

The average American household spends an estimated $1,400 each year on energy bills.

  1. George says:

Awesome. This sounds like a great idea. A bulb that cleans the air while it saves energy AND lasts for 7 years.

  2. Balu Rogu says:

Any and all CFL bulbs have the same energy savings and longevity, not just the “Ionic Bulb”. Also, if the light is not turned on, there are NO ions emitted. You will have to do it with the lights on to clear the air of the resulting smoke, odors and etc… lol

  3. George says:

Other CFL lightbulbs don’t last as long. See the label. Most last 5,000 hours some 7,000 hours. Some last 10,000 hours like the IONIC BULB. Your point is? You have to have the lightbulb on at night…which is when most people are home. While you have the lightbulb on…it is cleaning the air in the room. Simple.

  4. Lysol Brown says:

Hi Shivani, If you think the Ionic Bulb is cool, you should check out… http://www.purelyproducts.com/ They have a full line of energy saving negative ion emitting bulbs and other small portable devices. Purely would be a great topic for a Greenista article too. xoxoxoxox, Lysol

Soap Star: Kiss My Face Castille Soap

Brianne

Don’t want any day time drama when it comes to cleaning? Try Kiss My Face Peace Soap ($15.99/34 oz).  This castile soap is made by combining organic olive oil with coconut, hemp, and jojoba oils, and it’s biodegradable, veggie-based, vegan, and free of SLS, parabens, phthalates, and artificial fragrances. There are four eco-licious scents like Grassy Mint, Lavender Mandarin, Pomegranate Acai, and Lemongrass Sage Clary. Bonus: A portion of the proceeds go to Seeds of Peace and the soap has over 101 uses…seriously! Try it on home, body, kitchen, and outdoors. Greenista Girl Brianne used it to wash dishes and her pooch … not at the same time.  Steamy, hunky lothario not included.

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: Castile soap is one of the oldest forms of soap in the world. During World War I, a shortage of natural oils resulted in the development of synthetic detergents — like conventional ones we use today — as a substitute for soap-making.

Have Your Cake: DIY Cake Stand

Brianne

…And eat it too. Go for two slices, we won’t tell. Cake stands are super chic. You can use them to display food for parties or pile on pretty cookbooks for when there aren’t any baked goods in sight. Today, Greenista Girl Brianne is going to tell you how to make your own DIY cake stand with items lying around the house. Bonus: Those items will be turned into something new rather than be tossed in the landfill. Indulge in these instructions…

DIY Cake Stand

  • One old plate

  • On old candlestick or small vase

  • Super glue

  • Painters tape

  • Tape Measurer

  • Marker

Wash and dry your plate and base. Measure the back of the plate to find the center and make a dot with the marker. Place the plate bottom side up on a flat surface. Apply super glue to the top of the base and place firmly in the center of the plate. Hold in place for a few seconds and place painters tape vertically (so the tape touches the plate and the base). Let dry over night and hand wash when necessary.

Greenista Cocktail Factoid: Throughout the US, 17 billion (yes, billion) tons of household items are tossed into a landfill every year. By purchasing vintage, used, or making your own DIY items, you’re helping reduce trash heap waste and give new life to a landfill-bound items.
