Just think how proud you’ll be after making your own costume. Bonus: No copycats.

Halloween Week: Eco & Vintage Halloween Costumes

Ghosts, goblins, and dress up time! If you’re like us Greenista Girls, you live for Halloween. The candy, the fall weather, the scary movies, the costumes … the list goes on and on. However, most Halloween costumes are made from synthetic (read: chem-laden) fabric … and not to mention the toxic face paints. We’ll show you how to go green this Halloween.

Hit up your favorite vintage store for hippy, cow girl, prom queen, or even Lady Gaga or The Real Housewives-inspired duds.

Look around your house for items that you can turn into your Halloween costume. A sheet for a Greek Goddess toga, an apron for a Top Chef, and an all black long-sleeve and leggings is the start for any great animal … cat, skunk, dog, bat. PS: trash bags = bat wings.

Crafty? Make your own from scratch using organic fabric, bamboo, hemp, and other eco materials.

Share! Borrow your besties costume from last year and lend her yours. Or a week before Halloween, toss a costume exchange party. Bring one, leave with another.

Use Nova Natural Face Pencils. They are non-toxic and made from palm oil. They are super easy to apply and wash off. Just think of all the blood, bruises, and oozes you can create.

PS: Those gals are the LEED Green Building Fairies, who won Inhabitat’s Green Halloween Contest last year. How cute!
