Skinny jeans went from hipster trend to serious wardrobe staple in the last couple of years. I like to wear mine tucked into boots or with long blouses and structured jackets. It’s time to buy a new pair and in true Greenista fashion I’m looking for a pair made of organic denim.
Why organic denim? Denim is made of cotton, which takes up 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land but uses 16% of the world’s pesticides. Organic cotton cuts down on the use of chemical pesticides, which in turn cuts down on the amount of chemicals harming the environment, humans and animals.
Most mainstream and designer denim companies are starting to offer Eco-friendly lines. I decided to check out the classic denim company Levi’s Jeans. They offer Levi’s Eco, a line of denim made of 100% organic and recycled cotton. Even the Indigo dye is plant based. Their skinny jeans are extremely affordable, retailing for $69.50 online.
7 For All Mankind, the premium denim line from LA, have a great boyfriend skinny jean made of organic cotton. This pair is perfect for a slightly less “skinny” silhouette. They are more expensive at $198.00.
I also decided to check out the eco-friendly offerings from J Brand, another popular premium denim line. I’m a little disappointed to report they have a very small line of organic denim under their Green Label. Hopefully they expand this collection to more than just 2 styles of jeans. The skinny jean is vegetable dyed in their classic Woodstock wash. They sell for $209.00 on the website.
I was a little surprised at how difficult it was to find stylish and affordable skinny jeans made of organic denim. Can our readers help? Do you have a favorite pair of skinny jeans made of organic denim? Or a favorite eco-friendly denim company? Tell us about them in the comments.
